How to Download and Install Inventor 2016 R2/R3

Nobody likes to be left out, right? This is especially true when it comes to having the latest technology. We've been talking a lot about what's new in the Inventor 2016 R2 and R3 updates, but what we haven't covered is how or where to go to download them. So let's go over two options for downloading and installing these recent updates.

Keep in mind, the Inventor 2016 R2 and R3 updates are only available to users on a subscription license.

Autodesk Account

The first way is through the user’s Autodesk Account at manage.autodesk.com. Here you can see a comprehensive list of the Autodesk products you currently have. Find Inventor in the list of products then click on the click Downloads button below it.

In the new window, select Updates and Add-ons.

If there are too many updates to easily find R2 and R3, you can use the filter options or the search bar. For a more in depth look at all the search and filtering options, see here.

If you use this method, we recommend you use Internet Explorer instead of Chrome or Firefox.

Some users may run into issues with the search bar, but there is a work around for this problem. When typing into the search bar, instead of typing out the entire name, Inventor 2016 R2, shorten it instead like this: Inv 2016 R. This will narrow down the search results to show both the Inventor 2016 R2 and R3 updates.

Autodesk Application Manager

Autodesk Application Manager is another route to download the updates. This is how I personally downloaded the packs and I find it to be much easier. However, the Autodesk Application Manager only manages updates and does not handle add-ons and enhancements.

When you install any of the various Autodesk products on to your computer, Autodesk Application Manager is also installed. Here's a link to download it as well. To find it once it's installed, go to the Start menu and enter into the search bar “app” and usually the first search result is the Autodesk Application Manager. If not, you can search instead with it's full name "Autodesk Application Manager" or by going to All Programs > Autodesk > Autodesk Application Manager.

From there, you open up the app manager, and click where it says Updates or on the Update Software button on the left.

That brings you to a page where you can see all of the Updates that you have available based on which Autodesk programs you have installed.

From there it’s pretty straight forward, find the update, click install, restart your computer, and then it's ready to go. You can also see which updates have already been installed at the bottom of this list.

Autodesk Account vs. Autodesk Application Manager

Now you might be thinking to yourself, “Huh? So what’s the difference?” There are two main differences. In the Autodesk Account you have access to everything, the updates, add-ons, and enhancements, but with the Autodesk Application Manager you can only install updates. However, the Application Manager scans your computer and lets you know which new updates are availble and which you've already installed. So for most people, using the Application Manager is a much easier process since it takes out the guesswork of which updates you still need.

Now, I’m sure all of you want to go download the latest Inventor 2016 update or see what other updates you might have been missing out on. So go try it out for yourself!! Be sure to tune in each week on Thursday @ 10 AM to the Ketiv AVA webcast and see what else you might be missing out on.
