Companies are hesitant to invest in perpetual software licenses for short-term projects or when contract designers are brought in. With summer almost here, organizations are hiring interns to knock-out special projects or catch-up on overdue work.
Recently, Autodesk announced the option of pay-as-you-go software licenses to address those situations. This term-based licensing option, called Desktop Subscription (DS), delivers the promise of a low cost of entry without the risks of long-term commitment.
So, why is Autodesk offering an option for Desktop Subscription? Andrew Anagnost, Autodesk senior vice president of Industry Strategy & Marketing, recognizes that software development and delivery must keep up with changes in manufacturing and construction. Customers demand value and flexibility and the shift to Desktop Subscription delivers both. They can expect a simplified installation, maintenance, and upgrade experience and broader access to the Autodesk software portfolio.
Autodesk CEO Carl Bass, is committed to creating a legacy of modern software products that take advantage of the computing power and flexibility of the cloud. He’s among the many shaping the direction of the technology you’ll use now and in the future.
Why Should You Consider Including DS in the Mix?
- Low cost of entry and term-based fees are optimal for short-term projects or staffing fluctuations.
- Term-based DS can be charged directly to projects.
- Thorough evaluation of advanced solutions is affordable with term-based licenses. You mitigate the risk associated with the purchase of a perpetual license.
- Annual budgets are predictable with DS.
- Access to latest updates and prior versions of Desktop Subscription software.
In an announcement earlier this year, Mr. Anagnost confirmed that Design Suite products would be available as both DS and perpetual licenses after Feb 1, 2016, while non-Suite products would only be available as DS licenses. Eventually Suites will also only be available as DS licenses.
What does this mean for the majority of KETIV customers with perpetual licenses? It means you now have options. Consider the benefits of DS when you make your next purchase. And certainly keep your perpetual license maintenance subscriptions current. Upgrades are no longer available and lapsed maintenance subscriptions can be costly.
